The goal of the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project is to put the entire
corpus of Maya texts into a graphics database for the purpose of increasing
access to it. The hieroglyphic texts on monumental sculpture from the Classic
Period (A.D. 250-900) were the first to be included. Now nearly every large
site has been partially coded, and images have been scanned and prepared
for about 80% of the corpus.

The hieroglyphic database including the low resolution line drawings
of glyph blocks and clauses for both the monumental texts and the codices
will be available on a single CD-ROM (for Macintosh systems) and via the
WWW. This will allow access to these texts
never before realized. It also brings the most current transcriptions and
translations of the texts directly to the non-epigrapher, who may then utilize
the historical, archaeological, and linguistic information they contain.
It will also provide epigraphers with the ability to make truly comprehensive
searches and comparisons.
Products of this project include The Compendium of Maya Graphemes a listing of graphemes based on form, with a summary of proposed readings and references, and indexes of currently accepted phonetic and logographic readings. It includes three components: a revision of Thompson's glyphs for the monumental inscriptions; the glyphs of the Maya codices; the unique signs from the monuments. Final revisions to the first component are currently being made. A collection of unique graphemes from the monuments is currently being done by Matt Looper. Work on the graphemes of the Codices will begin when Gabrielle Vail joins the project in February of 1998.
Several single site CD-ROMs are planned. They will have the database information for that site plus maps, line drawings, and photographs of the site. They will also include previously published articles, as well as new articles by specialists currently working on the texts. Matt Looper and Tomas Tolles are preparing a CD-ROM for the site of Quiriguà. Ruth Krochock is preparing one for Chichen Itza. Martha Macri is preparing one for the site of Palenque. Gabrielle Vail and Martha Macri will produce the CD-ROM on the Codices.
